Digital oils and airbrush using Painter X and a Wacom tablet. A flotilla of Dorok Monitors comes under fire from Torumekian corvettes. Nausicaa and the valley gunship arrive to meddle in some way.

This picture took quite a while. I am happy with the composition/layout, but I struggled with color choice, particularly with the lead monitor. It still feels cartoonish to me (wooden decks do not always equal simplistic brown coloring). This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it wasn’t what I was aiming for. Part of the reason for doing a bunch of landscape speed paintings earlier was to improve my use of color, but I don’t know that I have demonstrated any of those lessons in this picture. That said, I think I effectively conveyed a sense of height/depth, and Nausicaa is just plain cool anyway.

Whoa, since ‘87!?! Impressive. I think I finally saw the movie in the late 90s/early 2000s and read the manga soon afterwards. I was actually sorry to see Yerf go; it was a great place for getting feedback. Unfortunately, I didn’t immediately go here after Yerf went kaput. There is a nearly 4-year gap in my art between Yerf disappearing and my finally getting an account at Deviant Art although that was probably as much due to starting grad school as Yerf disappearing.
