Making Wine by Choedan-Kal Making Wine by Choedan-Kal
Pencil sketch colored with Paint Tool SAI using a WACOM tablet (each panel was colored individually and slight style/color choice differences are evident). Berry Punch making wine. I hesitate to call this a comic, but I suppose it is sequential art. Despite the apparent flood of Berry Punch art, she isn’t my favorite background pony, but I do like wine and thought it would be nice to feature her in a few more…tasteful situations. If nothing else, as an Oenophile, I can sympathize.

A few notes: The first panel was not originally part of this series. It was, instead, a digital recolor of a real media (marker) picture I did as practice using SAI for the first time. However, since it fit with the theme, I decided to include it. The second panel has already been posted as its own deviation – I liked how it turned out – although I flipped the orientation to better match the image flow. RD looks like a bit of a creeper in the 3rd panel, but also cute.

Clapping Pony Icon - Rainbow Dash : Woo-hoo! Berry Punch took first prize! She's the awesomest winemaking mare in Equestria!

Derpy Clapping Icon : Yaaaay! I don't drink because my eyes already look drunk! (giggles) Derp!

Clapping Pony Icon - Rainbow Dash : (facehoof) Derpy, Derpy, Derpy...

BerryPunch  : (raises glass) To fine wine and good friends. I have boysenberry juice and blueberry muffins over here, Derpy.

Derpy Clapping Icon: Yaaaaaay!

Thank you so much for portraying Berry Punch in a positive and refined light! The fan art of her as the Ponyville town drunk gets old after a while, especially since it's dominated by, shall we say, lowbrow humor. :)

Thanks, and you are welcome. Although I sometimes find the drunk Berry jokes funny, I agree it can get old and so wanted to show an example of positive, responsible wine enjoyment. :)

I agree with you. Berry can't be an award-winning vintner mare if she's plastered all the time.
Of all the panels in this deviation, I like the first one the most. Berry is so happy and proud of her harvest. It's almost like she's inviting us to sample a few right off the vine before they're collected and crushed.
I like to think she grows strawberries as well, per her cutie mark, but they are in another part of her vineyard.

Maybe. I didn't have a a specific varietal in mind (other than some kind of red).

Oh Berry achieved the first place, nice one.

Curious, I though Rainbow only liked apple cider not wine.

Not only is your art style excellent, but you're portraying Berry Punch in a positive (as well as adorable) light and not as the stereotypical drunk. Great job on this. :)

Thanks! My wife and I both love wine, so I wanted to show a more respectable way in which her character could be interpreted (although the town drunk role can still be funny).

Watch (or re-watch if you have forgotten) the episode. You will see that RD's expression in the last panel is a reference (pretty much an exact duplication) to her reaction to cider in that episode.

True Fact: Berry Punch was white as a filly, but years of going to her grandfather's vineyard (and her inevitable 'addiction' [for lack of a better word]) not only stained her coat a pale crimson but, lead to her less than natural color as she grew older and continued to enjoy grapes, raisins, and other off-shoots and by products

her cutie mark is actually two-fold: she is not only good at making grape products she is also good at judging them, being able to tell the slightest imperfection not in just the grapes themselves but in the containers they were stored in AND shipped in. often making it impossible for her to enjoy dishes and drinks not made by her hooves.

They don't drink the wine if they are doing a wine tasting.
Where is the pail that they spit in?
What does it look like?
No big deal its just a minor detail.

Pail? Surely you are joking. This is isn’t some highfalutin tasting in Canterlot; this is Ponyville. Does Dash look like somepony who is going to spit anything out and waste that precious alcohol? Hell no. But in the unlikely event that anypony actually wants to spit, well, there is plenty of grass on the ground. (seriously though, dumping wine out on the ground isn't unusual at small-town wine festivals held outdoors - I've poured at a number of them over the years)

Cool.
Can I ask you about those affairs?

Had a friend who was into wine tasting but he was more into the
wine drinking and falling down part.

Went to one somewhat fancy wine tasting affair in Manehattan, it was across from Grand Central.
I missed the wine but I did check out the cheeses and crackers.
Got there when they started and later on it got so crowded I was happy to leave.

Sure - ask away :)

But yeah, my experience has generally been with non-fancy events (Our fall wine festival is just a bunch of tents set up in a grassy field). Of course, if you are actually a judge or going to a large event, you will probably spit. I went to the Virginia wine expo one year and didn't spit - after a dozen tastings, I definitely felt it. ;)

What was the best wine you had?
What did they use for palate cleansers?

I don't drink but I find the wine culture fascinating.
The special glasses, fancy looking bottles, well except for Thunderbird.

I have gone to fancy restaurants and it sucks if you don't drink, mostly.
In NYC, most places serve Coke and even if you say Pepsi, they auto translate to coke.
Unless you say Pepsi again, then they either get Pepsi or they say Coke.

Went to one place and they had Passionfruit Coladas, that was great but they decided
to go upscale and we had to leave it. The place used to do Mexican BBQ but they decided to put on airs and act
like a real fancy restaurant and my friends would not put up with that.

Thank you for your time.

The best wine that I recall having was a cabernet franc from a vertical tasting (vertical tasting is where you taste the same varietal from different years ) at Barboursville. But I also remember having a lot of great wines when I visited Temecula, CA (I just don’t recall a specific wine that stood out although I know I was immediately impressed with the first zinfandel that I had).

I don’t recall the specific palate cleansers at any specific place. Usually, it is some type of cracker, particularly oyster crackers.

As someone who grew up in Atlanta, I am used to using “Coke” as shorthand for any type of soft drink. A typical conversation is: “I’ll have a Coke.” “What kind?” Interesting that Coke is automatically assumed even in NYC.

Thanks for the info.

I went to Atlanta for a business trip.
The trip sucked, the town seemed nice.

Coke is assumed for any cola.
If you ask for ginger ale they will get you that.
Even places that just give you a can/bottle automatically default to Coke.
Most New Yorkers can not taste the difference but I can.
I do like cherry coke though.

Places that don't have soda I can ask for orange juice and cranberry juice mixed.

Have to wonder why her name is Berry Punch when she's associated with Alcohol all the time.
The should call her Grape Vine or something.
